Facing up to a court date

by Steven Cahill on August 20th, 2009

Yesterday as I was commuting home, I picked up a copy of the MX (19/8/2009) and read an article relating to the latest in user privacy issues relating to FaceBook.

Facing up to a court date

Five FaceBook users are suing the social network for doing what made it an online superstar – letting members share aspects of their lives on the net.

A lawsuit filed in a southern California court accesses Facebook of being a data-mining operation that does not deliver on promises to give users strict control of personal information.

FaceBook has dismissed the lawsuit as being without merit and promised a legal battle.

The suit asks for unspecified cash damages.

The suit accuses FaceBook of betraying one woman, who joined when membership was limited to the college crowd, by evolving into an open social network with 250 million members.

One interesting note I got from this article was the idea that FaceBook is a data-mining service.  Do you think there is some truth to it?
