Social Media Policy

As we become more involved in social media, should organisations have policies that outline the usages of social media networks?  Well this morning in my RSS Feed, Mashable posted an article: 10 Must-Haves for Your Social Media Policy

Sharlyn Lauby descibes 10 Policy Must Haves:

  1. Introduce the purpose of social media
  2. Be responsible for what you write
  3. Be authentic
  4. Consider your audience
  5. Exercise good judgement
  6. Understand the concept of community
  7. Respect rights and fair use
  8. Remember to protect confidentiality & proprietry info
  9. Bring value
  10. Productivity matters

I’m conscious of the things I put out on the Internet, I don’t want things to come back and bite me on the arse in the future.  Many of the networks I have are set to private and only a select few are welcomed into that circle, not only to protect my personal life but those within that network.

Additionally, currently I am developing an elearning product which hopefully will incorporate social media; we are having some difficultities due the policies put in place by various institutions however.
