60% of Twitter Users Quit Within the First Month

by Steven Cahill on April 29th, 2009

I’ve been using Twitter for a few months now; I have periods where I use it extensively, and then other times now and then.

I’ve curved that behaviour by linking a few of my other services into Twitter such as my WordPress blog and Google Reader.  So even if I am not physically tweeting I am still contributing to the Twitterverse by other means.

I was surprised to read a blog today over at Mashable that 60% of Twitter Users Quick Within the First Month

Stat tracking firm Nielsen reports today that a full 60% of users who sign up fail to return the following month. And in the 12 months “pre-Oprah”, retention rates were even lower: only 30% returned the next month. That’s good news, to some degree: retention rates have increased over time

I am interested in hearing from anyone who has used Twitter and discontinued their account, and why they gave it up.
