My Social Network

by Steven Cahill on March 27th, 2009

I’m always looking for ways in which to make my life on the ‘net easier when it comes to sharing information.  I blog, I Twitter, I Bookmark, I Facebook and I Flickr, I wanted a means in which I can share all thise without having to continuously maintain each and ever service I am with.  Over the last week I have been adding plug-ins to my blog in which will:

  • update Twitter and FaceBook
  • get RSS feeds from Google Reader
  • get my Flickr Photos

But I wanted to do more …

These are the tools I use:

How have I linked them together; this map will help visualise the linkage between each of the services.

Not only can I control these from any workstation but with the benefits of Internet connectivity via the iPhone I can twitter, wordpress, facebook and google from (almost) anywhere in the world which will keep me in contact with my social network.

I also use a some other tools which I havent contexualised in the above map; such as Technorati, Google Analytics and Webmaster Tools to assist with administration.

Where to next …

  • YouTube?

i use everything but delicious (what is it?)
additionally… i am quite interested, as a “amateur” web designer i reckon it would be quite interesting to see how you do all that (code wise) as i am building a website of me own and, like i’ve said, use all those sites.
    anyway back to it.

  3. Hi James

Delicious is a social bookmarking website.

Social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to store, organize, search, and manage bookmarks of web pages on the Internet with the help of metadata, typically in the form of tags that collectively and/or collaboratively become a folksonomy. Folksonomy is also called social tagging, “the process by which many users add metadata in the form of keywords to shared content”. Social Bookmarking @ Wikipedia

If you check out my links page you’ll notice I’ve integrated Delicious into my blog.

As to how I integrate these services together (wordpress->facebook, delicious->wordpress … etc etc etc). Many of these services provide snippets and widgets that you add to your pages; in other instances like facebook they offer integration by adding a link to that particular service. I’ve found the intergration useful in sharing information I like without having to manually duplicate it through each and ever website I utilise; plus helps bring traffic to my blog.
